The SaVAge K’lub takes its name from the Savage Clubs or historical gentlemen’s club which was first established in London in the 19th Century. Later multiple branches of the Savage Club were established across the globe including Australia and New Zealand. The SaVAge K’lub draws on the look of these gentlemen’s clubs but combines both historical objects and artworks with new artworks, performances and poetry. The K’lub members interact with these objects while in the space, often wearing or using them. This takes the objects out of their usual mode of display, reclaiming them from the confines of a European museum and placing them back within everyday life.
For The 8th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT8) at the Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art (GAGOMA) Rosanna and the SaVAge K’lub were invited to transport a K’lub room across the tasman. The decor for SaVAge K’lub was based on the cultural decor of Savage Clubs from the late 1900s including actual painting from 1889 which was housed from the Auckland Savage Club along side a Papua New Guinean motif wallpaper, graffiti art, tapa draped down the walls, a vaka hanging from the ceiling and cabinetry housing cultural objects or regalia as Rosanna refers to them. Rosanna also worked with the QAGOMA Children's Art Centre to develop a project for APT8 Kids. The K’lub members included in the APT8 were Margaret Aull, Jess Holly Bates, Eric Bridgeman, Salvador Brown, Emine Burke, Precious Clark, Lisa Fa'alafi, Charlotte Graham, Dr Mark James Hamilton, Katrina Igglesden, Jimmy Kouratoras, Numangatini MacKenzie, Ani O'Neill, Maryann Talia Pau, Tahiarii Pariente, Aroha Rawson, Rosanna Raymond, Reina and Molana Sutton, David Siliga Setoga, Grace Taylor, Niwhai Tupaea, Suzanne and Rameka Tamaki and Jo Walsh.
