  • Call For Proposals: Suffrage Anniversary

Wellington City Council’s City Arts & Events team and Public Art Panel are calling for temporary public art proposals from artists and curators in response to the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New Zealand, Aotearoa.

On 19 September 1893, New Zealand became the first self-governing country in the world to give women the right to vote. The council are looking for proposals from across New Zealand that recognise and respond to this landmark event and the significant role of women in shaping Aotearoa and world history.

This national call for proposals is open to all art-forms and mediums – visual art, sound art, performance, dance, text-based works and others. Collaborations and participatory projects are also welcome.

Projects must take place in Wellington during 2018 and should consider the key Suffrage 125 dates – 19 September (anniversary of when all New Zealand women over the age of 21 were granted the right to vote) and the 28 November (anniversary of when New Zealand women voted for first time).

The successful artist or curator will be awarded a public art fund grant of up to $20,000, and will be responsible for overseeing the project including the development, delivery and budget. City Arts and Events staff will provide guidance and support throughout the process.

    Application Deadline: Thursday 8 February.
