The 2018 Clelia Burton Fellowship provides a female visual artist resident in New Zealand with the time needed to develop her work. Preference will be given to an artist who paints in water colours, as did Clelia Burton (1878-1952), a watercolour artist who primarily focused on New Zealand flora, with work held in the Collection of the Alexander Turnbull Library.
In recognition of the competing demands that many women artists face, preference will also be given to a woman who has a family and who needs time out to focus on her work. An exhibition can be arranged during the three-week period.
The 2018 Clelia Burton Fellow will be in residence for three weeks at an historic 1911 villa that in 2001 was converted into NZ Pacific Studio, a year-round international residency centre. Over the past 16 years, the non-profit centre has hosted hundreds of creative practitioners. The five-acre facility has several studio spaces, well-maintained gardens, a large library, four fireplaces/woodstoves, sauna, and a cottage.
Accommodation costs are sponsored (valued at NZD1,050) for the Fellow and complimentary transportation is offered from the airport or train/bus station in Masterton/Palmerston North. The residency is self-catering.
