#ISLANDTIME is an attempt to break down the gap between Pacific time based art a Pacific audience.
Island time is often a comedic phrase used to define the alternate time zone Pacific people live (meaning we’re always late), however in this instance #ISLANDTIME defines the current wave of Pacific timebased practices. In the past year or so there has been a real increase in time based practices. The stories are raw, fresh and entertaining. These stories are often so pertinent to members of the Pacific community yet due to the exhibiting of these practices in gallery spaces the very community they are about never get to see them. For this project the work will be exhibited in two highly Pacific populated public spaces; Mangere Town Centre and Otara Town Centre, taking the form of live performances and installed film work.
By stepping outside of the gallery it allows a general public and passers by to engage with perhaps anotherwise invisible practice. It also provides a new challenge as an artist, suggesting new exhibition platforms. But most importantly it will allow for Pacific stories to be heard and Pacific audiences to hear them. www.hashtagislandtime.com
