  • Killer and Kind

Julian Hooper, who is of English, Hungarian and Tongan heritage, presents his first solo exhibition in Māngere.

Julian’s paintings for Killer and Kind revolve around his ancestry and include representations of his descendants. Often appearing abstract, his work is, however, figurative and takes an oblique look at modernism.

‘Many identities crowd my ancestry and heritage. Some I have met, while others are figures of history. Some are villains. Some are tender. I use painting as a way of calling up these figures to better understand them. I am positioned at the intersection of lines. Although these images take abstract forms, they are wholly representational.’ – Julian Hooper.
