In 2016, images from Frida Kahlo’s personal and historic collection of photographs will be exhibited in New Zealand for the first time. Te Manawa Museum of Art, Science and History in Palmerston North, is the exclusive New Zealand venue for this exciting international tour.
Leafa Wilson (Olga Krause) has created a new work called Love letter to Frida.Â
By engaging with the historical notions of Frida Kahlo and her iconographic relationship to Catholic symbolism and the metaphysical world, Wilson transforms into a living shrine or altar of retablos and milagro to Our Lady of Guadalupe. From different ends of these belief structures, Wilson finds a loving conduit that connects them. Both artists, both entwined in the metaphysical world; one living and suffering from lupus and mortality, and one who is dead, but whose incorruptible image defies death by the adoration of her art and persona.
The work itself will be available to be seen by those that attend the exhibition 16 April 2016 11.30 – 3.30pm.
