Deputy Chair of the Tautai Board
Josie McNaught does not claim to be “really clever†but she is proud to be able to call herself a journalist and now a lawyer. After 20 years as an arts journalist across print, TV and radio, including time as a court reporter and an investigative journalist uncovering art crime, it was time for a new career.
Her decision to study law arose because investigative journalism was being cut dramatically as advertising shifted to digital media and revenue dried up. She was also encouraged to study law as the qualities that she developed in journalism – to be articulate and fearless – are qualities known to make a good litigator. In addition, the qualities of idealism and advocacy that inspired her to choose journalism 20 years ago, also inspire her today.
She has returned to Auckland to pursue a career as a media and arts lawyer. Her practice covers all aspects of media law including defamation, vetting publications, film rights and contracts, with an emphasis on legal issues for the creative sector.
