Josh’s work investigates mark making and its ability to portray themes such as faith, family and landscape. His exploration of his Samoan heritage has allowed him to take Pacific art themes to a new level and show very contemporary facets of the culture. His, abstracted paintings and prints, often produced on loose canvas or recycled tapa cloth, play optical games with the eye. By manipulating, condensing and extracting imagery sourced from family photographs, internet images and pictures found in art books and magazines, Bashford produces richly patterned yet enigmatic works where symbols, figures and faces seem to materialise only to disappear.
